The one Covid-19 Lesson No One Talks About

Here’s some cold, hard truth for us today: Covid-19 is better at improving itself than we are.

Why? Well, we have very little daily motivation to become a better version of ourselves. We probably all have food, all have a place to live, and if we don’t improve every single day, we’re probably not going to lose our livelihoods, or our homes, we probably won’t lose our significant others or our partners, (at least, not at first…) In other words, we can easily become OK with where we are, and don’t need to constantly work on improving ourselves.

Covid-19, on the other hand, doesn’t have any of those luxuries. Since the second Covid-19 came into existence, some of the brightest minds in the world have been trying to kill it. Covid-19 has had a target on its back since it was first discovered.

The virus has had no choice but to improve itself on a daily basis. If it doesn’t, it’ll be eliminated. It mutates into a better version of itself for one reason – the only reason a virus has for existing: To continue finding hosts where it can replicate itself. That’s literally the only job of a virus. If it doesn’t do this constantly, it will die.

On the other hand, we’re here in our comfort zones. Most of the time, we don’t have a target on our backs. We don’t have to constantly try to improve.

But we should be trying. We should be trying to improve ourselves all the time. Because improving ourselves is the only way we improve everything else – our jobs, our friends, our family, our happiness, the world. Without constantly trying to improve, we will fail. We might not suffer the same fate as the virus, but we won’t be what we could have been. And in my mind, there’s nothing sadder than that.

If the virus can find the time to become a better version of itself, then dammit, so can you.

Stay safe, stay healthy, and keep on improving,

-Peter
