Thanks, Warner Home Video, for screwing up my Sunday night CES plans…

Have you joined my incredibly non-annoying, once-in-a-while email newsletter?

Stupid Warner Home Video – Choosing to go with Blu-Ray instead of HD… Which of course, in a very tail-between-their-legs type of way, caused the HD DVD consortium to cancel their Sunday night CES party. Which was shaping up to be a good one, and a good way to get into the CES groove.

Letter all us press people received:

Notice of CES Press Conference Cancellation by North American HD DVD Promotion Group

Based on the timing of the Warner Home Video announcement today, we have decided to postpone our CES 2008 press conference scheduled for Sunday, January 6th at 8:30 p.m. in the Wynn Hotel. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

We are currently discussing the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluating next steps. We believe the consumer continues to benefit from HD DVD’s commitment to quality and affordability – a bar that is critical for the mainstream success of any format.

We’ll continue to keep you updated on new developments around HD DVD.

Of course, one could blame the HD consortium for taking their toys and going home – but not really… When you think about it, what’s left to celebrate? Bummer. I’d love to know the backstory on this – Was the announcement supposed to be that WHV was going with HD, then some last-minute behind the scenes wrangling changed it to be Blu Ray, now HD doesn’t know what to do? And you know damn well that HD isn’t getting their money back for the party at the Wynn – You don’t reserve the Latour ballroom then 2 days before cancel and expect to get your money back. Definitely doesn’t work that way.

Feh. Now I’ve got nothing to do Sunday night. For now. But I’m sure that’ll change. The party list is posted, but there are at least four that I’m going to that aren’t on that list. Which I think is the point of them, when you think about it. What else is going on Sunday night? And remember, I’m still very much about my experiment of not spending a dollar on food and drink. So now I need to find other events on Sunday night, which I’ll cover for both the NY Sun, as well as this blog.

Ugh.

So I’m in Eloy today, hoping that this cloud base stays away and I can get a few jumps in before heading to CES tomorrow morning. We shall see. (EDIT: They didn’t. Neither did the gusts of wind. Feh. No jumping for me today.)

What else… The comments are fixed, and I’m still waiting for the stuff on the rigt to populate, (my twitter feed, etc.) but they’re coming.

Feedback on the new site has been generally good, I might lighten up the text just a microburst, just to see if it helps. So far, though, people seem to like it.

Finally, how come my Motorola V90m phone extended battery sucks as badly as it does? And I have two of them – and they’re both extended… And they both suck. And that’s not cool.

Truly finally: Two photos for you:

1) Last night’s sunset, driving from Phoenix to Tucson. Because I always try to bring happiness into your worlds.

2) This was taken today, on Park Link Drive, between Highway 79 and Camino Adelante Drive. I don’t know why my GPS took me this way, but it was over a 17 mile stretch of road, only eight miles of which were paved. It was a surreal experience. I was the only car on the road the entire time.

We’re on a road… to nowhere…See you at CES.
